Pain to Purpose

We often view Hagar as the bondwoman; facts would state she was, but not of her own doing. I'm afraid I have to disagree with what Sarah did, but if we examine ourselves and the cultural complexities of that time, we might have felt and done precisely what she had done. However, this is not about Sarah, nor is it really about Hagar. It has to do more with the pain and hurt felt at a moment of tremendous vulnerability and her efforts to escape pain, only to be told to return to it.

As children of God, the reality that faces us varies in the diversities and intricacies of what we are called to do. Like most of us, Hagar had to suffer pain, but it was not without a purpose. Life is a journey of highs and lows, victories and challenges. As Christians, we understand that pain is an inevitable part of our earthly existence, but it is essential to remember that God's love and wisdom are ever-present, even in our most trying times. In this post, we will explore and better understand our purpose in our pain with the understanding of how God can use this for His greater purpose.

As we embrace the reality that we will endure pain, let us not shy away from the fact that we were told throughout the scriptures one prerequisite of following Christ is to take our cross daily. My cross might differ from yours, but it will require us to endure great suffering. Recognizing our pain is crucial in understanding the necessity of finding our purpose. In times of distress and pain, we often seek comfort from God, and in doing so, we grow closer to Him. Our pain can serve as a catalyst to deepen our relationship with the Lord as we pray to Him, seeking solace and understanding. During these challenging times, God reveals Himself in profound ways, offering His peace that surpasses all understanding.

Our pain gives us a perspective that allows us to empathize with others. Our experiences of hardship enable us to connect with others on a deeper level and extend compassion and support to those going through similar struggles. In this way, our pain becomes the tool that fosters unity within and without the body of Christ, uplifting those in need. The pain of losing a child or the pain of divorce or separation has the power to refine our character, teaching us valuable lessons in humility, perseverance, and dependence on God. When we face adversity with faith and resilience, we grow to learn to trust God's sovereignty and His unwavering love for us.

Like the process of refining gold, our pain can purify our hearts, making us more Christ-like in character. As Christians, we believe that God works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Though we may not always understand the purpose behind our pain now, we can take comfort in knowing that God can turn our struggles into opportunities for growth and blessings. Through pain, God can redirect our paths, aligning us with His divine plan for our lives.

We can find hope in God's promises in the darkest moments of pain. He assures us that He will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5) and that His grace is sufficient for us (2 Corinthians 12:9). No matter how deep our suffering is, God's love remains constant, and He can give us beauty from ashes. As Christians, our perspective on pain fundamentally differs from the world's. We believe that even in our most challenging circumstances, God can use our pain to shape us into better versions of ourselves, drawing us closer to Him and equipping us to serve others with compassion and empathy.
